Trump promises 'strong' protections for denuclearized North Korea

Safety, verification questions hang over North Korea's plan to close nuclear site

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un committed to peace and denuclearization during the first inter-Korean summit in over a decade last month, having shifted from a policy of rogue nuclear weapons development to dialogue after years of intensifying sanctions.

During a meeting in the Oval Office Thursday, President Donald Trump publicly walked back the policy recommendation of his national security adviser John Bolton, who had said the US should push for North Korea to adopt a "Libya model" for its nuclear weapons program.

Wilder believes North Korea's threat to cancel the summit signifies that it gained a position of leverage over the USA after renewing rapprochement with Beijing.

Trump then stressed that the USA relationship with North Korea would also be different from that with Libya because the US had never promised Tripoli's leadership, military or economic support.

Here are Trump's words: "He'll get protections that would be very strong".

The threatened cancellation of the summit, the first between U.S. and North Korean leaders, would deal a major blow to what could be the biggest diplomatic achievement of Mr Trump's presidency.

Mark Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Americas division of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), yesterday suggested yesterday the U.S. decision to use state-of-the-art B-52 bombers and F-22 stealth fighters in the ongoing Max Thunder military exercises in South Korea may also have ruffled North Korean feathers.

Mr Chuanjian, who was hailed a hero after landing the Airbus A319 manually in China , said: 'There was no warning sign. The co-pilot suffered facial scratches and a sprained wrist, and a cabin crew member suffered a minor waist injury.

Ri was apparently referring to a news conference held by Thae Yong Ho, a former senior North Korean diplomat to Britain who defected to the South in 2016.

April 18: Trump confirms that Mike Pompeo, then the Central Intelligence Agency chief, had met secretly with Kim in North Korea and said "a good relationship was formed" heading into the adversaries' anticipated summit.

North Korea threatened Tuesday to cancel the June 12 summit between Kim and Trump in Singapore.

"None of this is surprising to people who have been watching the Korean peninsula for a long time", Panda concluded.

North Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan said in a statement that Bolton had even urged Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear arsenal first in order to receive benefits on trade, a stance similar to that taken with Libya. He said North Korean officials are discussing logistical details about the meeting "as if nothing happened". We went in and decimated him, and we did the same thing with Iraq", the USA president added. "If you look at that model with Gaddafi. that model would take place if we make a deal, most likely.

"The Libyan model isn't the model we have at all". "The risks would be astronomical, and if the summit blew up we could be right back on the brink to war again", he said.

A top Kim aide blasted Bolton this week, blaming the Libya deal for Gaddafi's eventual downfall in an internationally backed popular uprising in 2011.

European Union sanctions five people for organising Russian elections in Crimea
Russian Federation annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, which prompted backlash and sanctions from the West. Many in Russia saw the bridge as a move toward restoring Moscow's rule over a historically Russian region.

Mr Trump said he is "willing to do a lot" to provide security guarantees to Kim. "The best thing he could do is make a deal".

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said the schedule of military exercises hasn't changed.

Green said Bolton's suggestion of a quick handoff akin to Libya's approach is unrealistic because North Korea's nuclear programme is far more massive.

The exercises "are defensive in nature and the scope hasn't changed".

Seoul's Defense Ministry said F-22s are involved in the drills, but not B-52s. Bolton has repeatedly suggested the Libya model of unilateral disarmament for North Korea, most recently on Sunday. Libya's nuclear weapons program was completely dismantled and destroyed in 2003.

In previous talks, Pyongyang said it would consider giving up its arsenal if the United States removed its forces from South Korea and withdrew its so-called nuclear umbrella of deterrence from the region.
