Hart, Wilshere miss out as England announce squad for 2018 World Cup

Few Surprises in Gareth Southgate's England World Cup Squad

England manager Gareth Southgate named his 23-man squad for the World Cup on Wednesday.

The former Arsenal defender told ITV Sport: "I am surprised he's not taking Joe Hart".

The big question is who will start between the sticks when England line-up against Tunisia in just under a month's time at the
Volgograd Arena.

Gone are the days when England stuck rigidly to a 4-4-2 system at a major tournament that left them vulnerable against technically and tactically superior opponents.

Sterling is vastly improved under Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and one of the few current England players who can be described as world class, while Alli has the potential to hit the same heights.

Hart was expected to be called up after Southgate claimed in Match that he would be going to the World Cup.

Injured Dimitri Payet's tearful exit from Europa League final
Andre Zambo Anguissa miscontrolled a pass from goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and Griezmann was never going to miss after being played in by Koke.

However, don't fall for the suggestion that this is all part of a masterplan created to prepare for Qatar 2022, because football doesn't work like that. Gary Cahill is likely to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup.

Southgate has made 12 changes to the squad that floundered at Euro 2016 under Roy Hodgson, underlining his desire to build a group capable of providing long-term success - even if that means more experienced players missing out.

It is hard to question any of his selections.

But there was a place in the 23-man squad for rookie defender Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, although his Anfield team-mate Adam Lallana only made the stand-by list.

The other uncapped squad member is Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, having been selected ahead of 75-cap Hart to take the third spot behind Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland.

Defensively, there are good options rather than great ones.

The Englishman was also the difference-maker in the Manchester derby, leading United to a 1-0 victory over City with the only goal of the game.

This is an England squad that lacks quality in some areas. Physically, he also struggles to compete against the most accomplished teams and players.

The fact that the manager overlooked Lallana isn't entirely surprising - he has missed virtually the entirety of the last campaign with long-term injury worries, only making his return in a 15-minute cameo on the final day of Liverpool's season.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was rewarded for his fine form on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea, with versatile Fabian Delph - who last played for his country in 2015 - coming in after winning the title at Manchester City.

Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Danny Welbeck and Marcus Rashford.

Warriors Cover Steve Kerr's Bet in Game 1 Victory
The Rockets did their best to deny him the ball, but too many times it ended up in his hands in position to score. The difference in the game may have been the turnover battle, the Warriors' Achilles heel since Kerr took over.
