Facebook VP justified bullying, terrorism as costs of network's 'growth'

Facebook

A Facebook executive once said the company's drive to connect people online was a good thing even if "someone dies in a terrorist attack" planned through the website.

'Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools'.

"So we connect more people", Bosworth wrote in another section of the note.

Mr Bosworth tweeted on Thursday that he intended the memo to be provocative and that it was one of the most unpopular things he had written internally. "While this is common industry practice, we believe this step, winding down over the next six months, will help improve people's privacy on Facebook", the social media giant said in a blog post.

"In nearly all of our work, we have to answer hard questions about what we believe". We've never believed the ends justify the means.

Zuckerberg, 33, has been asked to answer questions from the Senate and House Judiciary and Commerce Committees, The New York Times reported. All the subtle language that helps people stay searchable by friends. "Most of these updates have been in the works for some time, but the events of the past several days underscore their importance".

BuzzFeed noted that the memo was written nearly immediately after a man was shot to death while streaming live video of himself with Facebook Live, and a few days before a Palestinian teenager was accused of killing an Israeli girl after praising terrorists on Facebook. Prior to this, there has been a growing evidence of Facebook's groups functions being used to promote hate speech and political discourses too - Russian operatives used Facebook to propagandize and troll Americans during the 2016 election.

But in furiously collecting users, their data, and advertising revenue, Facebook has exposed itself to privacy flaps such as Cambridge Analytica, which harvested personal information from more than 50 million Facebook users without their permission to assist the 2016 campaign of Donald Trump.

The leaked Facebook memo, entitled "The Ugly" and penned by longtime exec Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, has upped the creepy quotient on the world's largest social network, even as it wrangles with the current scandal about its data dealings and the work of voter-profiling firm Cambridge Analytica.

In nearly all of our work, we have to answer hard questions about what we believe.

Google Home speaker, Home Mini India launch soon, confirms company
Reports have surfaced that the company is working on a mid-range Pixel , specifically made for emerging markets in South Asia. Previously, They launched the Pixel devices exclusively on Flipkart and since Amazon's Echo is a rival to their product.

Bosworth who now argues he was playing the devil's advocate concluded saying, "We have to justify the metrics and make sure they aren't losing out on a bigger picture". We've heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find and that we must do more to keep people informed. Because that's what we do. (The Federal Trade Commission has started an investigation.) Facebook has proposed, and is undertaking, self-regulation to address the issue-even if it means significant changes to its business model that result in short-term blows to its revenue model.

The memo drew criticism after it leaked this week.

BuzzFeed noted that the memo was written nearly immediately after a man was shot to death while streaming live video of himself on Facebook Live - one of several gruesome online incidents that have demonstrated the dark side of a connected world.

Zuckerberg stood by Bosworth, who goes by the nickname Boz, while distancing himself from the memo's contents.

At least some Facebook critics accepted Bosworth's defense that he'd merely been trying to provoke.
