Russia vetoes UN draft resolution pressuring Iran over Yemen

Yemenis walk through an alley in the old quarter of Sanaa. The United Nations security council on Monday delayed a planned vote on extending sanctions on Yemen amid ongoing diplomatic wrangling over efforts to condemn Iranian meddling in the conflict. Yah

Backed by the United States and France, the British-drafted resolution was supported with 11 votes in favour on Monday, before Russian Federation used its veto and other member states abstained from voting.

The British-drafted resolution, which would have called out Iran's failure to block supplies of missiles to the Yemeni rebels, was supported by most members on the 15-member U.N. Security Council in an 11-2 vote, but was ultimately blocked by Russia's veto.

Iran, along leading worldwide human rights organizations, has called for an immediate end to the sales of arms by Washington, London and other Europeans to Saudi Arabia and other aggressors, who are killing innocent Yemeni people on a daily basis.

China and Kazakhstan abstained, while Bolivia also voted against the measure.

Russia's Representative to the United Nations welcomed the unanimous passage of the resolution and thanked the Council's delegation for "making a correct decision".

In Blow to Dianne Feinstein, Democrats Won't Endorse Her Senate Run
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is courting more moderate and even conservative voters, won just 9 percent. But neither Democrat will receive the state party endorsement because they failed to reach the 60 percent threshold.

Iran has denied supplying the Houthis weapons.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president.

The key focus of the draft text, which needs to be adopted by February 26, is to renew targeted United Nations sanctions and the mandate for the independent experts who monitor their implementation.

According to the report, a missile fired into Saudi Arabia in 2017 by the Huthis was made in Iran, though it was unable to definitively identify the supplier. He added that as the text of the future resolution was negotiated the Russian side offered "more than one compromising formulation", but Russia's ideas were dismissed.

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a Russia-tabled draft that will see a technical extension of sanctions against Yemen. He told reporters Saturday, "We are still working on the text, but the intention is to adopt it Monday morning".

"Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Haley, who was traveling to Honduras.

Iran's U.N. Mission reiterated Monday that it "categorically rejects allegations regarding arms transfer to Yemen".

Russian envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzia welcomed the Security Council's unanimous support of the Russian resolution.

But the United States has accused Iran of being the aggressor and has pressed the UN council repeatedly to take action to punish Tehran.

The UNSC resolution aims to prolong the experts' mandate in Yemen, not to form an anti-Iran coalition in the region, Nebenzia pointed out.
