According to The New York Times, Kushner, a senior White House adviser, met with the co-founder of private equity firm Apollo Global Management, Joshua Harris, and the chief executive of banking giant Citigroup, Michael L. Corbat, before Kushner Companies received a combined $509 million from them. Harris met with Kushner multiple times to discuss infrastructure policy, but they also spoke about Harris possibly getting a job with the administration, which never happened.

When Kushner joined his father-in-law's administration, he stepped down as CEO of his family's real estate company but is still seen as closely linked to the business, which has sought loans from foreign countries and banks to cover the company's debt, potentially creating several conflicts of interest and problematic entanglements for Kushner. Citigroup also lent Kushner Cos.

A spokesman for Kushner's lawyer told the Times that he "has taken no part of any business, loans or projects with or for" Kushner Companies since joining the White House. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.

It was a few months after those meetings that Apollo loaned Kushner Companies $184 million to refinance a mortgage on a Chicago building, the newspaper said.

A memo on Friday stated that White House aides with temporary top secret/SCI-level clearances would have their statuses downgraded, according to Politico.

Apollo defended its move in extending the loan to Kushner to the New York Times.

Bernstein said that Kushner's security clearance issues and financial dealings while serving as a senior White House adviser could become focal points in Mueller's probe on possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russians in the 2016 election.

Peter Mirijanian, a spokesperson for Lowell, said in a statement that Kushner "has met with hundreds of business people".

Special counsel Robert Mueller is focused on Jared Kushner "like a laser" after the president's son-in-law had his security clearance downgraded, Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein claimed on Tuesday night.

Taylor, of Kushner Cos, told the Times "stories like these attempt to make insinuating connections that do not exist to disparage the financial institutions and companies involved". His real estate holdings and other investments are worth as much as $761 million, according to government ethics filings.
