Samsung crams 30TB of SSD into a single 2.5-inch drive

Samsung a prominent provider of advanced memory technology has just announced the world's largest-capacity solid state drive (SSD) with a whopping 30.72 terabyte (TB) storage space.

Samsung's PM1643 is not a consumer-focused device. So in layman's terms space is enough to have nearly 5,700 HD movies or approximately 500 days of non-stop video.

According to Samsung, the drive - catchily named PM1643 - is built from 32 sticks of 1TB NAND flash packages, all containing 16 layers of 512GB 3D Vertical NAND chips.

The new device becomes the successor to the previously released 15.36TB SSD that was unveiled in March 2016. The new drive also features a 40GB DRAM, an upgraded and more efficient drive controller and associated software. The SSD is said to be able to hold about 5700 HD movies of 5GB each which is much more than anything in the industry is able to hold.

Latvian chief Rimsevics released from custody
The governor, who's led the Latvian central bank since 2001, may be protected by the institution's independence. Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola said her country's reputation was suffering because of the scandals.

The new SSD is specifically created to fulfill the requirements of next-generation enterprise storage systems combining the technology such as 64-layer V-NAND and -bit 512-gigabit chips.

Samsung's new 30.72TB whopper uses a 12Gb/s SAS connection that provides the dual port and failover features prized in the data center.

With this SSD, Samsung is debuting a new controller architecture that integrates nine controllers into a single package, enabling a greater amount of space within the SSD form factor to be used for storage.

This produces an SSD capable of 400,000/50,000 random read/write IOPS - heavily skewed to read performance - and 2.1/1.7GB/sec sequential read/write bandwidth through a 12Gbit/sec SAS interface. By way of comparison, the aforementioned 860 EVO tops out at a 4TB model, so there's still a mountain to climb before such Herculean capacities trickle down to the High Street. "This represents almost 4X the random read performance, and some 3X the sequential read performance of typical 2.5" SATA SSDs.

Choose the best data plan & enjoy 4G high speed internet at affordable prices with Vodafone Prepaid Unlimited SuperPlans. On the other hand, Reliance Jio is giving 2GB data with unlimited calling for the validity of 28 days.

Along with being big and fast, the world's largest SSD is robust as well.

If you need to pack more storage into your enterprise systems, then boy has Samsung got the SSD for you.

The price and sale date of the new SSD is not revealed yet.

Samsung started manufacturing initial quantities of the 30.72TB SSDs in January and plans to expand the lineup later this year - with 15.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 800GB versions - to further drive the growth of all-flash-arrays and accelerate the transition from hard disk drives (HDDs) to SSDs in the enterprise market.
