Ethiopia announced state of emergency amid political unrest

State of emergency in Ethiopia as country's prime minister resigns

Siraj Fegessa, Ethiopia's defense minister, told local media on Saturday that the state of emergency, due effective for six months, will bring together the country's security forces to ensure "the country's law and order is effectively maintained".

In August previous year, Ethiopia lifted a 10-month state of emergency imposed after hundreds of people were killed in anti-government protests demanding wider political freedoms.

"We strongly disagree with the Ethiopian government's decision to impose a state of emergency that includes restrictions on fundamental rights such as assembly and expression", it said in a statement.

The charity said it had received a reference from someone claiming to be his former Oxfam boss, sent from a private email account. The charity confirms Damien Berrendorf, Oxfam's country director in Haiti from 2012 to 2017, was dismissed previous year .

"The government has previously made several efforts to curtail violence, but lives have continued to be lost, many have been displaced and economic infrastructure has been damaged", he said.

The demonstrations began against a government plan to expand the capital Addis Ababa but then morphed into greater demands for civil rights.

However, in 2015, months of anti-government demonstrations spread across Ethiopia, leaving hundreds dead and prompting parliament to declare a 10-month state nationwide state of emergency in October 2016. During that time, curfews were in place, movement was restricted and about 29,000 people were detained.
