Grapeshot: Notley says Alberta will stop importing BC wine in pipeline fight

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced the wine ban Tuesday in response to the B.C. government's ongoing opposition to the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which would increase the transport of bitumen from the oilsands to the B.C. coast.

Kenney described the plan as a way to ensure no such projects are built before accusing the Trudeau government of not doing enough to ensure the Kinder Morgan pipeline is built in the face of social and political opposition in B.C.

Jan Nelson with Tinhorn Creek Vineyards near Oliver, B.C., said they send about 15 per cent of their production to Alberta every year and the ban will cost them about $100,000 per month. "To us to be used as a pawn is hard", he said.

"We did play by the rules, and we secured the approval of a new pipeline to tidewater to export energy products that support tens of thousands of jobs across this country", Notley said.

"I think it's going to affect related sectors, such as hospitality, bed and breakfasts, transportation, restaurants - many things that are associated with wine", he said. While the province of Alberta has been pushing for the project to get the green light, British Columbia has actively opposed the plan.

British Columbia's government needs to be reminded that it does not own Canada's western coast, that it cannot ignore the law and does not have the right to usurp a federal project in the national interest - even if it takes a trade war to do so.

Horgan, newly arrived from a trade mission to Asia where he touted the glories of Okanagan grapes to buyers in Seoul, Beijing and Tokyo, said he won't be distracted by "retaliatory trade actions". "I'm here for B.C., not Alberta".

Horgan said he hadn't had a chance to read the entire proposal, but he commended the federal government for recognizing the need to keep pace with changing views and perspectives. "Clearly the federal government doesn't think so and many British Columbians don't think so", Horgan said.

The wine ban is the second trade retaliation Notley has announced.

"They're harming actual small farmers, which is ironic coming from a province like Alberta that understands agriculture and farming and all that goes into that".

Notley, in a video statement posted on her Twitter account, said that the boycott of B.C. wine would not be the end of action her province will be taking.

"We're continuing to discuss and engage with the B.C. government, with the Alberta government", he said.

7 that he's pleased to hear strong and continuous words of support from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the company's Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project, but that at some point the federal government will have to act.

Anderson said he sent a letter this week to Horgan about his concerns for the province's plans and its implications for the $7.4-billion Trans Mountain project that would nearly triple the capacity of the pipeline.

"We are actively preparing measures to get Ottawa to step up and B.C.to back down", she said.
