Intel calls for pause to Meltdown, Spectre patch rollout

The company has asked vendors to test these patch versions more quickly, to keep systems up to date, and to continue working with it to ensure customers are adequately protected.

That's the latest directive from Intel, who cited spontaneous reboot and system instability problems - first reported January 11 - following its latest firmware patch aimed to defend against the Spectre and Meltdown exploit vulnerabilities.

International Monetary Fund cuts South Africa's growth forecast for next two years
The IMF raised its growth forecasts for Italy to 1.4% this year and 1.1% next. India's growth percentage is said to be more than China's.

The firm's executive Vice President Neil Shenov wrote: "We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behaviour". The firm claims to have already issued early versions of fixes for these issues to its partners, but not yet a final release. However, until then, Intel is changing their tune in terms of updating. However, even though Intel has now figured out why those reboot problems occurred with those processors, it seems that relief for end users will depend on the speed of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) testing efforts. But when carrying out some more intensive tasks, like browsing the internet on multiple tabs, users could see slowdowns closer to 12 percent on computers running with patched chips, Intel found.

With Apple having their own remediation in progress, to fix the same issues on their home-grown processors for iOS devices, and AMD also caught up in this (although to a much lesser extent than Intel) this issue is one of the most pervasive and hard to remedy vulnerabilities I can recall.

Here's what the last government shutdown looked like
The past year has found the NPS and public lands managed by other agencies caught in the cross-hairs of the Trump Administration. Instead of drastically increasing fees, the administration and Congress should support the National Park Service Legacy Act .

Intel's decision to pause the updates comes amid criticism from technical experts of the industry's approach to patching Spectre and Meltdown.

Meltdown removes the barrier between user applications and sensitive parts of the operating system.

Intel hasn't said when fixed patches will be available for other architectures, but notes that the Broadwell and Haswell fixes should help it address the reboot problems on other platforms.
