British tourists in Jamaica warned to stay in resorts

The website states: "A State of Emergency has been declared in St James Parish which includes Montego Bay".

"Tourists should stay in their resorts and limit travel beyond their respective security perimeters". "You should follow local advice, including restrictions in selected areas", the Foreign Office said.

The U.S. Department of State has not updated its travel advisory for Jamaica since January 10.

The UK Foreign Office (FCO) warned holidaymakers that "intensive law enforcement activities" were expected in St James Parish after a state of emergency was declared there on Thursday.

Already, civil rights campaigners have raised alarms about the new division . Conservative groups , like the Family Research Council, lauded the decision.

Soldiers have been deployed on the streets in St. James parish after a series of killings led to a military response. It has not warned against travelling to Jamaica.

It adds: 'Travel to and from the airport or for excursions should be undertaken with organised tour operators, and transport should be arranged or provided by the resort hotels'.

Both countries are warning their citizens about travel to the area after a state of emergency over violence and shootings continue to occur in the tourist hot spot.
