Teacher questioning administrative pay raises removed from board meeting in handcuffs

Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle School in Kaplan, Louisiana, was questioning a proposed $38,000 raise for the district superintendent during the meeting's public comment period when a city marshal asked her to leave. After Hargrave posed several questions, board president Anthony Fontana ruled Hargrave out of order, warning her that the public comment section was not for a question-and-answer session.

Hargrave was put in cuffs before she was escorted from the building.

In latest developments, the superintendent of Vermilion Parish schools said they won't press charges against Hargrave, despite her since being booked with 'remaining after being forbidden and resisting an officer.' .

At one point the educator tells the board that it was a "slap in the face" for the school superintendent to be handed a new contract that entitles him to performance-based pay rises, while declining to follow suit with teachers and other school based workers.

"You're making our jobs more hard", she said.

After continuing to criticize the board, Hargrave had been asked to leave and was escorted into the hallway where the incident occurred.

KATC reports the teacher was booked into jail.

She was taken outside by a police officer, handcuffed, and arrested for resisting arrest. Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

At least one school board member said at the meeting that the treatment Hargrave received was unacceptable, noting that she had "never seen a man removed from this room".

Hargrave reportedly told district Superintendent Jerome Puyau that it was a "slap in the face" that he was receiving a raise.

She was placed in an Abbeville police patrol auto.

"I do believe in the First Amendment, and everyone should be able to go to a school board meeting and express how they feel", she said.

"As an organization that advocates for the dedicated school employees of Louisiana, we firmly denounce the mistreatment of Ms. Hargrave, a loving parent and dedicated teacher serving the students of Vermilion Parish", the union's statement said.

On Tuesday morning, Hargrave's Facebook page was filled with supportive comments, some thanking her for taking a stand.

California Commissioner Condemns Session's Move Against Legal Pot
She said Sessions' directive "simply gives prosecutors the tools to take on large-scale distributors and enforce federal law". But the emerging pot industry is rooted in shaky legal ground, complicating regulatory, financial and advertising issues.

It's unclear if the deputy marshal was acting on his own accord-of if he was called on to have Hargrave removed.
