Spotify's Chief Content Officer Leaves Ahead Of Planned Public Offering

His departure comes as Spotify gears up for a public listing, for which it filed paperwork in December. The lawsuit, which has been filed in Federal Court in California will definitely send a message to these streaming companies that there is no free ride off the hard work of others.

The confidential filing was initially reported by news outlet Axios.

Spotify's top content executive is leaving, just ahead of the streaming music company's planned public offering.

The company is now being sued in a $1.6bn lawsuit by Wixen Music Publishing, which accuses Spotify of failing to pay mechanical licenses for songs on its service in the US.

Jeff Sessions Fulfills Dream of Cracking Down on Legal Weed
Public perceptions of marijuana have shifted over time , and an increasing chunk of the public favors easing restrictions on it. The move raised questions about how it might impact tax revenues in states that permit some form of legal marijuana use.

Under the Copyright Act, there are two separate copyrights to every recorded song: one for the sound recording (this revenue typically goes to the record label) and one for the musical composition (this revenue typically goes to the publisher and songwriter).

The lawsuit alleged Spotify had used thousands of songs without properly getting the license to distribute them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Spotify has built a billion-dollar business on the backs of songwriters and publishers whose music Spotify is using, in many cases without obtaining and paying for the necessary licenses", the lawsuit says.

A rep for Spotify declined Variety's request for comment.

S. African tourist killed in Egypt balloon crash, 12 injured
The crash happened in Luxor, a popular tourist destination on the banks of the Nile River in southern Egypt. Those on board the flight included a number of foreign nationals along with Egyptian tourists.

The Wixen Music Publishing Company claims that the streaming service did not have all the required licenses for them to offer some songs on their catalog.

This is not the first time that Spotify has found itself in the hot seat, but this is definitely the most they have stood to lose at once.

In its own lawsuit, Wixen described the 2017 settlement as "grossly insufficient".
