Jeff Sessions Fulfills Dream of Cracking Down on Legal Weed

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions

American Attorney General Jeff Sessions has cancelled a federal policy that let American states legalize marijuana.

The move raised questions about how it might impact tax revenues in states that permit some form of legal marijuana use.

The federal perspective, however, has never changed.

Gen. Xavier Becerra said Thursday that if a new federal policy results in prosecutors charging marijuana growers and sellers licensed by the state, he would not rule out intervening in court on behalf of the state-sanctioned business.

Sessions wrote that he is simply directing "all U.S. Attorneys to use previously established prosecutorial principles that provide them all the necessary tools to disrupt criminal organizations, tackle the growing drug crisis, and thwart violent crime across our country".

US attorneys might continue to decide not to take up marijuana cases that don't fall under the Obama-era rules. State officials voiced their concerns after U.S. Atty.

UK Lawmakers Propose 'Latte Levy' To Cut Coffee Cup Waste
Starbucks said on Friday it would trial a 5p charge on takeaway coffee cups for three months in about 20 London cafes. The 25 pence charge would go towards improving Britain's recycling and reprocessing facilities, the report said .

Robert Troyer, who was appointed an interim USA attorney for the District of Colorado by Sessions in November, said his office's decisions regarding marijuana cases would be guided by similar principles as before: "focusing in particular on identifying and prosecuting those who create the greatest safety threats to our communities around the state".

Sessions' new memo does not explicitly set forth how prosecutors should treat medical marijuana, though a senior Justice official explained that prosecutors wouldn't do anything contrary to any current federal law.

David Kopel, an adjunct professor of constitutional law at the University of Denver and research director of the Independence Institute, said Sessions' announcement is sending a shock wave across Colorado, which not only changed its laws, but amended its state constitution to legalize pot.

As the White House continues to grapple with the bombshell allegations outlined in a new book about the Trump presidency, a report that the president sought to control the early stages of the Justice Department's Russian Federation probe is likely to cause further headaches for the administration.

The potential political fallout may be clearer: Republican Sen. According to The New York Times, Trump rejected the letter and sent it back to Sessions with a note saying "Not accepted". "Is the federal government going to come into California" to raid businesses?

The Sessions memo did not distinguish between enforcement against marijuana used for recreational versus medicinal purposes.

Trump had said that he would respect voters' rights in places that have elected to modify their drug laws.

"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my Presidency", Trump said Wednesday. "I'm a states person".

"What I think may happen is people who otherwise kept their heads down are going to have to stand up and speak out", charged Murphy.

"In California, we decided it was best to regulate, not criminalize, cannabis". Trump told a TV news reporter that the decision to legalize marijuana should be left "up to the states".

"This is potentially more evidence that the president was obstructing justice in connection with the Comey investigation", the former prosecutor said.

Advocacy groups said the Sessions revision not only flouted the president's previous commitments to local democracy but also amounts to bad public policy.

The head of the Drug Policy Alliance said Sessions is defying the 64 percent of the American people who support marijuana legalization.

Public perceptions of marijuana have shifted over time, and an increasing chunk of the public favors easing restrictions on it. In Oregon, U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams said he would maintain the same level of enforcement and focus on unlicensed production of marijuana and smuggling out of state.

But the Obama administration was already doing that, Ari.
