Amazon Alexa will soon let users control ovens and microwaves

The number of people in the USA using voice-enabled speakers more than doubled in 2017 to 36 million, with Amazon capturing 71 percent of the market.

However, Alexa's smart abilities can not used for existing ovens.

Could Alexa be the next big thing in 2018? Customers can already use Alexa to control the June Oven with their voice. Ovens and microwaves are the current focus, but Amazon hopes that other appliances will be compatible beyond that. While you won't be able to ask Alexa for cookies and have a tray of piping-hot chocolate chip emerge from the nearest Echo smart speaker, it will allow manufacturers to bake the the assistant into their upcoming microwaves.

The feature seems especially useful if you're in a busy kitchen with your hands full. Users might soon be able to use Amazon Alexa to start cooking or heating food in a microwave.

"The interfaces are designed for future extensibility as support for more cooking devices becomes available".

To make this a success Amazon is also working with a handful of partners or developers to be precise, but it is yet to be seen as to how quickly the support will roll out.

Whirlpool has signed on to launch an Alexa-ready microwave that will be the first to the market.

The four new skills from Amazon include Alexa.Cooking, Alexa.Cooking.TimeController, Alexa.TimeHoldController, and Alexa.CookingPresetController, says the company.

The new feature, called Flash Briefing, is easily set up after downloading the Amazon Alexa app on an iOS or Android device.
