Google abandons Project Tango, validates Apple's approach

And that's a wrap - Google has officially pulled the shutters down on its Project Tango program, the initiative launched in 2014 for giving phones a better idea of their location in 3D space and providing augmented reality (AR) overlays through a smartphone's scanner.

Meanwhile, Google introduced ARCore, a developer toolkit for creating augmented reality apps and experiences, back in August.

Little has been heard of Google's augmented reality (AR) platform Tango for quite a few months, and now the final death note has been issued for the technology this week. But Google definitely doesn't see a point in continuing Tango since it started ARCore.

Money from the fund will go to help the family pay for funeral arrangements and help at home, the page states. Avocado orchards are more vulnerable due to their location near hillsides in the path of the fire.

We're turning down support for Tango on March 1, 2018.

Project Tango was launched in 2014 to enable mobile devices to detect their position relative to their world around them without using Global Positioning System. Google said it expects to launch v1.0 in the coming months "with support for over 100 million devices".

Also helping put that final nail in the coffin was Apple's ARKit, which was made available to developers in early summer then came to consumer devices in September with the release of iOS 11.

Well, the requirement of specialized hardware is one of the reasons why Project Tango wasn't adopted as widely as it should have been. Another manufacturer that has supported Project Tango is Lenovo, with the Phab 2 Pro large-screen smartphone that was launched in 2016.

Still, fairly recently Google seemed committed to Tango.

Tango was Google's ambitious effort to build augmented reality into mobile devices. As this has an added advantage over the Tango and in the future, Google AR Core is expected to be a built-in feature on the Android ecosystem.
