Google is hiring 10000 reviewers to clean up YouTube

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki says they will work to eliminate extremist material propaganda and content harmful to children

The platform recently lost advertisers after ads appeared next to videos with inappropriate content involving children.

She said that since June, when Youtube deployed new technology to flag violent extremist content for human review, the platform had manually reviewed almost 2m videos and removed 150,000.

"Some bad actors are exploiting our openness to mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm", Wojcicki said, adding that YouTube's trust and safety teams have reviewed almost 2 million videos for violent extremist content over the past six months.

The company on Monday announced its new initiatives, which include beefing up its surveillance teams to have more than 10,000 people in 2018 and moving faster to shut down inappropriate content.

Starbucks' New China Store Is the Size of a Supermarket
Princi is the exclusive food offering in all Starbucks Roastery locations , including Seattle, Shanghai and upcoming locations. The company already has over 600 stores in Shanghai - the largest number of stores in any city where Starbucks has a presence.

Reuters reported last month that several major advertisers - such as Lidl and Mars - had pulled ads from the platform over "clips of scantily clad children".

In a blog post, Ms Wojcicki explained: "Human reviewers remain essential to both removing content and training machine learning systems because human judgment is critical to making contextualised decisions on content".

The video streaming company built an automated software to determine videos with extremist content. Equally, we want to give creators confidence that their revenue won't be hurt by the actions of bad actors.

"We need an approach that does a better job determining which channels and videos should be eligible for advertising", she said. "We've heard loud and clear from creators that we have to be more accurate when it comes to reviewing content, so we don't demonetize videos by mistake".

Ali Abdullah Saleh killed by Houthis trying to flee Yemen's Sanaa
The fighting in the capital of Sanaa caused residents to cower in their homes as explosions rocked the city overnight. Saleh had on Saturday issued his message to the Saudi-led coalition in a speech broadcast from the studios.

Wojcicki says that YouTube is taking lessons learned from the first wave of the Adpocalypse - which was ultimately triggered by violent and extremist content - and applying them to tackle other forms of problematic content (as well as video comments), including those that pose child safety concerns and feature hate speech.

Machine learning is key to this process, however, and YouTube has already harnessed it to great effect in flagging violent extremist content - as well as comparable comments - for human review.

"Because we have seen these positive results, we have begun training machine-learning technology across other challenging content areas, including child safety and hate speech", she said.

Google Is Clamping Down On App Data Collection
Further, if the apps save information that is not necessary they are needed to explain users how the data is going to be used. Interestingly, apps installed outside Google Play Store will have to follow the new guidelines too.
