Rohingya people continue to flee oppression in Myanmar

Divided Asean urged to act on Rohingya crisis

In a statement posted on its Twitter feed, the salvation Army of the Rohingya of the Arakan (ARSA) explains that the truce will end on October 9th at midnight.

"The humanitarian pause was conducted in order to enable humanitarian actors to assess and respond to the humanitarian crisis in (Rakhine)", it said.

"If, at any stage, the burmese government is open to peace, then the ARSA will be welcome and will act in reciprocity ".

Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is expected to visit Myanmar this month, to hold talks on the repatriation of Rohingya who have fled that nation's insurgency-affected Rakhine state.

The policy would also allow religious freedom to be used as a basis for discrimination against women and other minorities. Senator, told ABC News that Friday's guidance could pave the way for discrimination of vulnerable populations.

As the world's fastest-developing refugee emergency intensifies, there are fears of escalating violence in Myanmar.

The minister announced his visit about a week after Dhaka and Nay Pyi Taw agreed to establish a joint working group soon to repatriate Rohingya people who have crossed into Bangladesh.

The UN has described the violence in Myanmar as "ethnic cleansing". While the worst of the violence appears to have abated, insecurity, food shortages and tensions with Buddhist neighbours are still driving thousands of Rohingya to make the arduous trek to Bangladesh.

"Obviously there's into the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya still in Myanmar, and we want to be ready in case there is a further exodus", Lowcock told a news briefing in Geneva.

"International aid agencies say some 5,15,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh in six weeks since the end of August".

Ms Hasina's assurances on Saturday came as a top United Nations official said that Bangladesh's plan to build the world's biggest refugee camp for 800,000-plus Rohingya was risky because overcrowding could heighten the risks of deadly diseases spreading quickly.

Myanmar rejects that. It says more than 500 people have been killed in the fighting, a lot of them "terrorists" who have been attacking civilians and torching villages.

The new refugee camp will be build at Kutupalong, which is near to the border town of Cox's Bazar. And given how vulnerable the Rohingya, who have managed to take refuge in our land, are, ruling out such a possibility might be disastrous.
