Ryanair has until 5pm today to sort out compensation for hundreds of thousands of travellers hit by mass flight cancellations or face possible legal action.

CAA chief executive Andrew Haines told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that "if they [Ryanair] follow through on what they are saying, then they would be breaking the law".

In a press release the airline state that any passenger wishing to change their mind "should write directly to Ryanair's Director of Customer Services and Ryanair will assist them in any way it can to obtain their full EU261 rights and entitlements".

Ryanair earlier cancelled up to 50 flights a day through to the end of October, also affecting 400,000 passengers.

Only if these options are not available will it offer passengers, "re-accommodation on any one of our agreed disruption partner airlines".

But U.S. officials said they could not corroborate the death and other Western as well as Iraqi officials were skeptical. It is under attack in its remaining enclaves in Iraq and is facing parallel Russian and US-backed offensives in Syria .

Should the option be unavailable on the same or next day, the Irish carrier will either move passengers onto the next available Ryanair flight from/to a suitable alternative airport, such as London Luton or London Gatwick for flights that were scheduled to depart from London Stansted.

"While over 99pc of our 129 million customers will not have been affected by any cancellations or disruptions, we deeply regret any doubt we caused existing customers last week about Ryanair's reliability".

If an airline cancels a flight it must offer passengers an alternative flight under European Union law, according to CAA guidelines.

But Malcolm Ginsberg, editor-in-chief of Business Travel News, said: "Initially fares [on Ryanair] are going to be very, very cheap, but then they're going to steadily go up".

Analysts have said that while the cancellation troubles have worsened, the airline wasn't renowned for having a stellar reputation among customers before.

The move may signal that the ultraconservative kingdom wants to improve its image. Previously, women in the Gulf nation could be arrested for driving.

The budget airline said it had taken on more extra staff to process the expected increase in customer claims. It appears that Ryanair has now capitulated.

"We will review their position in detail and monitor this situation to ensure that passengers get what they are entitled to in practice", he said in the statement.

The new cancellations include several popular routes used by United Kingdom passengers, such as Stansted to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Gatwick to Belfast, Newcastle to Faro, and Glasgow to Las Palmas.

Ryanair says the cancellations were brought about because of an error with pilot holiday rosters.
