Buildings evacuated in Moscow after bomb threats

Authorities say they received "almost simultaneous" warnings that more than a dozen public places had been rigged with explosives, and made a decision to evacuate.

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated from public spaces across Moscow after authorities received several bomb threats. Various individuals have made anonymous calls over the internet to emergency services since September 11, resulting in evacuations of 45,000 people in big cities all over Russian Federation.

Terrorists have earlier rocked Moscow on two occasions.

Many were city halls, schools and other official buildings, Bloomberg reported, citing local news reports.

Olga Shterk, a spokeswoman for the Chelyabinsk regional police, said that Russia's Federal Security Service was investigating the incidents as a "spam attack", according to Radio Free Europe.

At least five cities were targeted by bomb scares in the Russian Far East, Interfax reports.

The Interior Ministry and Security Council declined to comment. Security services told the RIA news agency that over 45,000 people were evacuated from public places in 22 Russian cities on Tuesday, adding that numerous calls appeared to have come from Ukraine.

Bomb threats were also issued for Moscow's three railway stations - Kazanskiy, Leningradskiy and Kievskiy. Also, students and teaching staff were evacuated from the Sechenov Medical University and MGIMO International Relations University. Social media accounts show bemused crowds milling passively outside evacuated buildings, and there have been no reports of disturbances of public order.

In response, the military intensified "clearance operations" against "terrorists", driving thousands of people from their homes. Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh say ethnic Rakhine Buddhists joined security forces in the indiscriminate killing of villagers.
