The fallout over that Google diversity memo rages on

Goolag Search

James Damore, the software engineer fired by Google for circulating a 10-page manifesto inside the company that suggested women might be under-represented in tech generally and "leadership" inside the company due to their biology, has described the company as "almost like a cult" in an opinion column published the Wall Street Journal.

Damore was sacked on Monday after his memo, which claimed that biological differences made women less suited for careers in tech, was circulated widely.

He wrote that when the document went viral, "the upper management sent angry emails to Google's human-resources department and everyone up his management chain, demanding censorship, retaliation and atonement".

Arsenal Edge Leicester in 7-Goal Premier League Thriller
Shakespeare was true to his word and started Riyad Mahrez despite the Algeria global asking to leave the King Power Stadium. Craig Shakespeare had to watch his side blow two leads in the Premier League opener against Arsenal on Friday.

Ads criticizing Google over firing James Damore have been plastered on benches and bus stops near the company's office in Venice. The document slammed Google's "politically correct monoculture" and advanced gender stereotypes about women in the workplace. In the meantime, the fired Google employee has been thrust into the spotlight and gained several job offers.

Pichai canceled the meeting, though, after some employees expressed concerns about being harassed online.

"If Google continues to ignore the very real issues raised by its diversity policies and corporate culture, it will be walking blind into the future-unable to meet the needs of its remarkable employees and sure to disappoint its billions of users", Damore wrote. Around half of the 60 women considering suing Google are current employees, Finberg said, adding that over a dozen women admitted that discrimination at work played a role in their leaving the firm.

The dollar notched a two-month trough on the safe-haven Japanese yen and was last down 0.3 percent at 109.99. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 1.69 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,374.23.

Damore has been on a media tour, giving interviews to Bloomberg and conservative YouTube host Stefan Molyneux. Critics of Damore's firing are planning to protest outside Google offices in five USA cities. Fired4Truth, widely believed to be Damore's Twitter account, hit 35,000 followers in a matter of days. Damore has now filed a complaint against Alphabet under a provision of the National Labor Relations Act that protects workers' rights activists. James Finberg, the civil rights attorney working on the potential lawsuit on behalf of Google's female employees, told the Guardian that female staff at the tech giant have earned less than men, despite being equally qualified. Next to Pichai is the Google logo but instead the text reads "Not So Much".

Inside Google, the memo and its fallout represent perhaps the biggest setback to what has been a foundational premise for employees: the freedom to speak up about anything and everything.

Damore received company rebuke when he released and had an anti-diversity memo published. The loud voice here is the liberal one.
