North Korea to ASEAN: Be impartial, practical on denuclearization issue

Rex Tillerson expected to press Asian Countries on North Korean threat

The United Nations Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday over its continued missile tests that could slash the reclusive country's $3 billion annual export revenue by a third. The U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, called the U.S. -drafted resolution "the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against" North Korea.

North Korea is ready to give the United States a "severe lesson" with its strategic nuclear force if it takes military action against it, and will not put its nuclear program or its missiles on the negotiating table, it said in a statement to a regional meeting on Monday.

"Neither shall we flinch even an inch from the road to bolstering up the nuclear forces chosen by ourselves, unless the hostile policy and nuclear threat of the USA against the DPRK are fundamentally eliminated".

In remarks to reporters Monday morning, Tillerson said the best signal North Korea could give that it was prepared for negotiations with the US would be to halt its missile launches.

Daily Afternoon Rain & Storms
Highs will remain in the low 80s through early next week before climbing toward more seasonal norms by Wednesday and Thursday. Late this afternoon and into this evening, storms will likely develop across western and northwestern North Texas.

There was no direct reaction from North Korea to the remarks but in a statement after the U.S. secretary of state made his comments, Pyongyang responded robustly to the new sanctions by saying it would exact "thousands-fold revenge" on America.

But Tillerson says it's not as simple as North Korea stopping launches for a few days or weeks. He said the North could still carry out further missile tests or a sixth atomic bomb test in the coming months under its broader weapons development timetable.

But a commentary in the ruling party's Rodong Sinmun newspaper said Washington had disregarded the warning the North sent with its intercontinental ballistic missile tests and was pursuing "desperate efforts" in the form of stepped-up sanctions.

The latest United Nations resolution bans North Korean exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood.

North Korea reacts to Trump comment
Tensions have escalated rapidly in recent weeks after North Korea tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July. Locked and loaded - that's how President Trump described the USA military solutions for dealing with North Korea.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote Saturday on a new sanctions resolution that would increase economic pressure on North Korea to return to negotiations on its missile program.

Within the framework of the resolution, the United Nations members would not be available to open joint ventures or cooperative entities with North Korean entities or individuals, as well as not to increase the number of North Korean workers already engaged in the projects on the territories of the member states.

During the Asean Regional Forum in Manila, Wang said sanctions highlighted the global community's opposition to the North's nuclear weapons programme and continued missile tests.

"Unfortunately, it was not that North Korea responded to my statement". Kang is thanking the US for consulting with South Korea on the sanctions.

Tropical depression forecast to become Tropical Storm Gert today
A turn toward the north is forecast to occur Sunday night, followed by a turn to the north-northeast on Monday. It has a 20 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression over the next five days.

"What we have to do is everything we can to pressure this regime, to pressure Kim Jong-un and those around him such that they conclude, it is in their interest to denuclearize", he said. Those tests sharply escalated US fears that Pyongyang is a key step closer to mastering the technology needed to strike American soil with a nuclear-tipped missile.
