NAACP Condemns 'Unite the Right' Hate Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia

State of emergency declared in Virginia as violence erupts between alt-right and anti-fascist protesters

A man from OH was held by police on charges relating to the auto incident, including second-degree murder, said Martin Kumer, Albemarle Charlottesville's regional jail superintendent.

At least nineteen others were hurt - suffering minor to life-threatening injuries, authorities said Saturday.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in the U.S. state of Virginia, accused of driving his vehicle into a crowd of protesters and killing a woman.

Brennan Gilmore, a 37-year-old who works for a start up, shot the footage and said he heard tires squealing before he saw a gray Dodge Charger build up speed and ram the crowd. A graphic video showed the moment the auto hit the crowd.

It was not immediately clear if the collision was intentional. "And then it reversed back into the street dragging bodies and clothes".

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe told white supremacists and neo-Nazis who came to Charlottesville for the planned rally: "Our message is plain and simple".

"White nationalists had assembled in Charlottesville to vent their frustration against the city's plans to take down a statue of Confederal Gen. Robert E. Lee".

The incidents came hours after violent clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters amid rising tensions in the city. According to AP, the individual suspected of being behind the wheel of the auto during the attack is in custody.

Thomas said the hit-and-run is being treated as a case of criminal homicide.

At least one person has died and 19 were injured after a auto ploughed into anti-fascist protesters opposing a major white nationalist march planned for this weekend. They also reported that Charlottesville and Virginia state police in riot gear stood nearby doing nothing at first. "There's no role for racism or bigotry in the United States of America", he said.

As marchers began gathering near Emancipation Park, many could be seen brandishing white supremacist and Nazi regalia. Later in the evening, Trump praised law enforcement officers at the protest and offered his condolences to a victim.

Earlier in the week, Virginia's governor had declared an emergency, and police worked to disperse hundreds of protesters in the college town after clashes broke out ahead of the rally's scheduled noon.

While the name of the victim had not been released Saturday night, police identified the suspect arrested in the car-ramming incident as James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio.

It took him a while, but after a couple of formulaic, tepid tweets about the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which continued to roil throughout Saturday morning and afternoon, Donald Trump finally stood at a podium to speak out against hatred. "I am disgusted by the hatred, bigotry and violence these protesters have brought to our state". "There was violence between protesters and counter protesters today".

But Trump walked away without giving an answer.

Disturbances began Friday night during a march through the University of Virginia before escalating Saturday.
