Markets Right Now: Stocks drift lower on Wall Street

Shares slip, yen and gold gain as Korea tensions escalate

The Nikkei slumped to its lowest close for nearly three months Wednesday, leading an Asia-wide sell-off sparked by President Donald Trump's apocalyptic warning over North Korea's weapons programme. It has been more than a year since the last 5% downdraft in stocks and more than 76 weeks since the stock market suffered a 10% loss.

ASIA'S DAY: Earlier, Asia bore the brunt of the mounting geopolitical uncertainty, with South Korea's Kospi index closing down 1.7 percent at 2,319.71 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ending 2 percent lower at 26,883.51.

While the Nasdaq climbed 39.68 points or 0.6% to 6,256.56, the Dow inched up 14.31 points or 0.1% to 21,858.32 and the S&P 500 edged up 3.11 points or 0.1% to 2,441.32. The Nasdaq composite fell 45 points, or 0.7%, to 6,324. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks gave up 13.20 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,396.95.

TIME OUT: Fossil tumbled 23.6 percent after the watch maker said sales continued to weaken, falling short of analysts' estimates.

Priceline Group slid 6.9 percent after the online travel booking service issued a profit forecast that was weaker than analysts were expecting. MetLife fell 75 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $47.56, while Charles Schwab slid 69 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $41.33.

The Dow industrials rose 42 points, or 0.2%, to 21885 on Friday.

The major averages all closed in positive territory, although the tech-heavy Nasdaq outperformed its counterparts.

MOUSE HOUSE: Disney dropped 4.7 percent a day after the media giant reported a weak quarter and said it would pull its movies from Netflix and start two of its own video streaming services.

Avis Budget Group Inc. slumped 9.9 percent after the auto rental company cut its guidance following a weak second quarter.

Wall Street stocks posted their biggest declines in almost three months Thursday as President Donald Trump doubled down on his warnings to North Korea over its nuclear program. The stock lost $2.97, to $8.87. Consumer-focused companies and technology stocks slumped.

OIL: Benchmark U.S. crude lost 24 cents to $48.37 per barrel on the on the New York Mercantile Exchange while Brent crude, used to price global oils, declined 20 cents to $51.70 per barrel in London. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, added 21 cents to $52.91.

Silver gained 47 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $16.86 an ounce.

CURRENCIES: The dollar fell to 109.96 yen from 110.48 yen late Tuesday.

Gold fell $2.10 to $1,262.60 an ounce.

Excluding food and energy prices, core consumer prices still crept up by 0.1 percent in July, matching the increases seen in the three previous months.

Global Stocks Poised for Weekly Declines
The latest sell-off was the most severe yet, amounting to the biggest single-day drop for the stock market in almost three months. MARKETS OVERSEAS: In Europe, Germany's DAX was down 1 percent, while France's CAC 40 fell 1.4 percent.
