BBCI: Venezuela crisis: Latin Americans condemn Trump over 'military response'

US President Donald Trump said on Friday he was considering military options as a response to the escalating crisis in Venezuela, a move the South American country quickly shot down as "craziness". Venezuela is not very far away and the people are suffering, and they are dying.

The White House later said that Mr Maduro had requested a phone call with the American president.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino called Trump's talk of possible military action a "crazy act". Trump added that Washington is considering several options to intervene in Venezuela, one of them being military action should its need arise.

The National Constituent Assembly (ANC) - a body of 545 representatives of different localities, and social movements, labor groups, and indigenous communities which is now the highest legal power in Venezuela - was sworn in on August 4 at a ceremony attended by thousands of jubilant Chavistas who support the Bolivarian revolutionary government.

Man Utd: Expect a title challenge from Mourinho's men
He said: "When I joined Manchester United past year I thought immediately that we needed a Matic kind of player". City is much more equipped to launch a sustained title challenge, with Guardiola close to having his ideal squad.

"A military operation and military option is certainly something that we could pursue". "Mr. Lopez and Mr. Ledezma are political prisoners being held illegally by the regime", Trump said in a statement earlier this month, referencing Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma, two of Maduro's top political opponents.

But Trump's latest comments were the first sign that he is mulling military intervention.

The newly-established Constitutional Assembly of Venezuela announced itself superior to all other governmental institutions, including the opposition-controlled congress.

All this served as the backdrop for the reconvening of the National Constituent Assembly on Wednesday, Aug 9, where the topic of discussion was one of paramount importance: the struggle to diversify, strengthen, and address the character of Venezuela's economy in the face of the economic war waged by the national and global forces of austerity, neoliberalism and counter-revolution.

As marchers began gathering near Emancipation Park, many could be seen brandishing white supremacist and Nazi regalia. Later in the evening, Trump praised law enforcement officers at the protest and offered his condolences to a victim.

Venezuela has come under fire for using excess force against demonstrators during four months of anti-government protests by citizens outraged over rampant inflation and shortages of food and medicine.

"No. I don't think so", McMaster said. Suspicion and resentment linger in many corners of the region, a reflection of years past when USA troops did in fact invade parts of Latin America to oust leftist leaders or collect unpaid debts. On Friday morning, Trump said "military solutions are now in place" should "North Korea act unwisely".

Maduro says the protests are a violent effort to overthrow his government and assures that the constituent assembly will bring peace to the country.

Not even the frustration over Trump's decision to partially roll back Obama's opening to Cuba - a diplomatic thaw that was applauded across the region's political spectrum - or his constant talk of building a border wall to keep out immigrants got in the way of presenting a united front toward Maduro.
