Danish submarine creator arrested over missing reporter

Swedish journalist Kim Wall is missing after taking a ride on Peter Madsen's homemade sub

Officers did not identify the owner, Peter Madsen, but he appeared on Danish television on Friday to discuss the submarine's sinking.

The 30-year-old Sweden-born freelance journalist had studied at the Sorbonne university in Paris, the London School of Economics and at Columbia University in NY where she graduated with a master's degree in journalism in 2013.

The decision to rescind Madsen in custody for a further 24 days was made by a judge after a two-hour custody hearing.

The submarine is lying in 7ft of water, but divers have not been able to enter it safely yet, police said.

"Whether the woman was on board the submarine at the time of her disappearance is unclear", Danish police said without naming her.

A Danish inventor and owner of a huge DIY submarine has been accused of manslaughter after the disappearance of a female journalist who had been on board before it sank, police said yesterday.

Peter Madsen was arrested Friday on preliminary manslaughter charges after his 40-ton, almost 18-meter-long (60-foot-long) UC3 Nautilus sank.

The woman's partner raised the alarm early on Friday when the vessel did not return from what was supposed to be a short journey. The Navy said the sub was seen sailing, but then sank shortly afterward.

Sanctions may not halt North Korea nuclear program
In what might be a last-ditch effort at reaching a diplomatic solution with an increasingly volatile North Korea, the U.N. China, North Korea's biggest ally and trade partner, backed the sanctions in a bid to spur dialogue.

"My client denies the allegations", Betina Engmark, lawyer for 46-year-old inventor Peter Madsen told AFP, adding that he was "hurt" to be suspected of involvement in her death.
