Asian Stocks Fall Amid Escalating US, North Korea Tension

Crude oil prices fell on Thursday, on concerns of lingering global oversupply as Russian Federation considered a future output resumption and OPEC boosted its July production numbers.

The benchmark S&P 500 index tumbled more than 1 percent on Thursday, only the third time this year it has fallen that much, while the Nasdaq shed more than 2 percent.

The MSCI World index slipped 0.1 percent, extending Thursday's 1.1 percent drop, its biggest one-day slide since May 17, hurt by the escalating U.S.

At the close trading in NY, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 204.69 points, or 0.9%, to 21,844.01, its biggest one-day fall since May 17.

Nine of the index's 10 main groups ended lower.

SIMMERING TENSIONS: North Korea revealed on Thursday a detailed plan to launch a salvo of ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, a major military hub and home to U.S. bombers. While North Korea often threatens to attack the USA, the revelation of this plan was unusual. The number of people who applied for US unemployment-insurance benefits rose by 3,000 to 244,000 in the week that ended August 5, the Labor Department reported.

In a directive aimed at enhancing the efficiency of PuC centres, the Supreme Court directed the government to monitor them on a regular basis.

Stocks plunged, while US Treasuries and gold climbed, as US President Donald Trump's latest comments further inflamed tension with North Korea. Consumer-focused companies and technology stocks slumped. Nvidia fell $4.73, or 2.7 percent, to $167.38. Net income was $116.0 million, or 38 cents per share, up from $11.0 million, or 3 cents per share, for the same period past year.

Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman were all up, lifting the Dow Jones U.S. defense index 1.17 percent. The stock fell $2.25 to $20.79. That's the biggest increase since May.

Stocks to watch: Blue Apron shares tumbled almost 18%, despite a beat on revenue (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/blue-apron-shares-climb-after-revenue-beat-better-customer-revenue-2017-08-10).

Avis Budget Group slumped 9.9 percent after the auto rental company cut its guidance following a weak second quarter. The trend appeared to overshadow strong quarterly revenue growth in the quarter. The stock lost $5.23 to $101.75.

Gold hit its highest level in nearly two months after Trump added to the geopolitical anxiety by boasting of the strength of the United States nuclear arsenal.

Investors opted for the perceived safety of US Treasuries, which pushed the yield on the 10-year note three basis points lower to 2.21%.

Also rising was oil and gas services company Amec Foster Wheeler as pre-tax swung to a profit of £77m from a loss of £446m a year earlier, though.

Small-company stocks fell more than the rest of the market. It added 39 cents to $49.56 a barrel on Wednesday. Twenty-First Century Fox gave up 46 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $27.57.

In currencies, the yen rose 0.8 percent versus the greenback at 109.2 per dollar JPY= , the strongest level for the Japanese currency since mid June.

Below that level lies another key technical chart support level for the dollar at 108.13 yen, a trough the US currency k plumbed in mid-April.

In Asia, markets were mostly lower after disappointing Chinese trade data. Germany's DAX fell 1.2 per cent, while the CAC 40 in France lost 0.7 per cent. Britain's FTSE 100 sank 1.4 per cent. Humana rose $3.59, or 1.4 percent, to $253.81.

The Nasdaq composite slid 18.13 points, or 0.3 percent, to 6,352.33.

The dollar index .DXY , which measures the US currency against a basket of other major currencies, fell 0.14 percent.
