After 106 Years in Antarctica, Fruitcake Still Looks 'Like New'

The delicacy made by British cake makers Huntley and Palmers was still wrapped in paper

Scientists from the new Zealand heritage trust Antarctic hut at Cape Adare in hand was a unusual find - a 106-year-old pie. The company was founded in Reading 1822, and by 1900 Huntley & Palmers was the biggest biscuit factory in the world with its own railway system connecting to the Great Western Railway.

The huts were the first buildings in Antarctica and are the only examples left of humanity's first building on any continent. It was discovered in an old hut at Cape Adare, which is an major site used by Antarctic explorers.

Made by Huntley & Palmers, the cake is in excellent condition: it's still wrapped in paper and encased in the remains of a tin-plated iron alloy tin.

Will Manchester United stop underachieving this season?
The Belgian scored United's only goal in the 2-1 loss, but it was a bad miss that has stuck in the memory for some. The 42-year-old, who is now vice-president at Italian side Parma, added: "Wow, I hope so".

Her team believe that the cake, found on a shelf in a hut in Cape Adare, belonged to Robert Falcon Scott's northern party from 1911.

So how would a 100-year-old, well-preserved fruitcake taste?

Though, according to employees of the Fund, the tin box in which lay the dessert was in pretty bad shape, the pie looked and smelled "almost like edible".

The AHT team is now planning to begin the conservation work on the buildings at Cape Adare.

Programme Manager-Artefacts Lizzie Meek said finding such a "perfectly preserved fruitcake" in a severely corroded tin was a huge surprise.

"It's an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions, and is still a favourite item on modern trips to the ice".
