Wind fans the flames of Utah fire that has burned 13 homes

Fire managers expected little help from nature on Tuesday.

In the big metro areas of Phoenix and Las Vegas, temperatures are expected to be above 110 degrees.

No injuries or fatalities have been reported, a sign that people in the area are following evacuation notices.

It's estimated firefighting costs now top $7 million for a fire started June 17 near the Brian Head Resort by someone using a torch tool to burn weeds.

Some flames reached 100 feet high, while fire crews faced dry, windy conditions Tuesday and a "high potential" for extreme fire behavior, officials said late Monday. The brush fire quickly grew from 125 acres at 4 p.m.to a massive 1,200 acres shortly after 6 p.m., Cal Fire officials said. Officials had been anxious that the winds would push the fire to the northwest.

In Arizona, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management said in a statement that the Goodwin Fire, which started about 14 miles south of Prescott on Saturday, had burned almost 4,400 acres of land in the Bradshaw Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest. The Brian Head Fire has burned almost 50,000 acres as of Tuesday morning. In Arizona, Governor Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency on Friday as more than 20 wildfires burned in the state.

"More than anything, we want to remind citizens to please, please, please be careful", he said.

Also on Monday, a national fire prevention team landed in Salt Lake City to devise a statewide strategy going forward.

The nation's largest active fire is raging across Southern Utah near the ski resort town of Brian Head. Two of the largest are in southern Arizona and Utah.
