United Kingdom reveals details of post-Brexit offer to European Union citizens

'For if we get the negotiations between the United Kingdom and the European Union right and reach a deal that protects jobs, business, and prosperity across the continent of Europe by maintaining trade flows, and avoiding risky cliff edges, then we can maximise the size of the cake and each enjoy a bigger piece'.

A "settled status" will grant European Union nationals and their families, who have spent five years in the United Kingdom, the same rights as British citizens after Brexit.

Will the "settled status" be lost if you leave the United Kingdom for two years (like Permanent Residency)?

Those who have not lived in the United Kingdom for five years on the cut-off date will be able to remain, but will only be able to apply for a "settled status" after five years.

"As such we want to protect the Common Travel Area arrangement, and Irish citizens residing in the United Kingdom will not need to apply for settled status to protect their entitlement".

And we intend to introduce a voluntary scheme to enable eligible EU citizens to apply for their residence document before the United Kingdom leaves the European Union - reducing uncertainty and making Brexit as smooth and efficient as possible for EU residents in the UK.

It is likely that European Union citizens and family members who wish to take advantage of the streamlined digital process will need to provide their passport, as well as biometric information to protect against fraud.

However, the detailed proposals published on Monday had provoked a cool response, with Mr Barnier tweeting that the goal on European Union citizens' rights was to have the "same level of protection as in European Union law".

Under the plans - which will affect around three million people - those granted settled status will be able to live, work, study and claim benefits in the same way they now can.

He also said British voters had "rejected in large numbers" her threat to to turn the United Kingdom into "an offshore tax haven aimed at undercutting the European Union by ripping up regulation, hacking back public services".

A cut-off date has not yet been announced. "My first impression is that the United Kingdom offer is below our expectations and risks worsening the situation of citizens, ' he added".

Britain wants an early breakthrough on citizens' rights, so it can move onto the next stage of talks. "The calculation that people are beginning to make is that she is so inadequate we can't wait two years with her in place"‎, it added.

Maersk says its IT system is down
It added that "all strategic assets, including those involved in protecting state security, are working normally". He added that any response would take time to implement given the large volume of traffic handled by the port.

However, settled status is not the same as citizenship.

'Among the new detail, we welcome in particular, the assurances that registration for migrant employees will be streamlined, reducing the administrative burden for employers and simplifying the process for workers.

Theresa May has also said people who apply for settled status will have to undergo criminal record checks and will be rejected if they are "serious or persistent criminals and those whom we consider a threat to the UK". "We are merely asking to maintain the status quo, with no degradation of our rights - it's not a matter of generosity but of justice", said Sue Wilson, chair of Bremain in Spain, which is campaigning on behalf of an estimated 300,000 Britons living in the country.

After Brexit, dependents will be subject to the standard United Kingdom immigration rules.

Brexit Secretary David Davis and other ministers are likely to attend fortnightly meetings of the new group, an official familiar with the plans said, asking not to be named discussing government business.
