Montreal man accused in Flint airport attack denied bond

FLINT, Michigan | Montreal, Amor Ftouhi, suspected of having committed the terrorist attack last June 21 at the global airport Bishop Flint, Michigan, will be back in court Wednesday. He was accused of having committed a violent act at an airport.

That's the same thing witnesses say he yelled before stabbing Lt. Jeff Neville in the neck exactly one week ago at Bishop.

In a calm voice, Amor Ftouhi said "Allahu Akbar" twice as he entered a federal courtroom in Flint this morning. Officials said Ftouhi targeted a city with an global airport, but declined to say why Flint was chosen. The Montreal resident, who was born in Tunisia and maintains residency in both countries.

"A productive next step would be for each of the countries to sit together and continue this conversation", Tillerson said . Iranian president Hassan Rouhani voiced his support for Qatar , saying "the siege of Qatar is unacceptable to us".

Ftouhi's attorney told the judge her client understood, given the seriousness of the charge, that he's not a U-S citizen and he has no ties to MI, that it was unlikely he would get bond.

She said she discussed the detention hearing with Ftouhi that morning and they both agreed that getting out on bond would not be likely given the nature of the offense and the fact that Ftouhi, who lives in Canada, has no ties to MI. She told a federal judge Wednesday that the 49-year-old defendant from Montreal would be held by US immigration authorities even if granted bond in the criminal case.

The prosecutor did not disagree and did not add any comment.

Ftouhi's next court appearance will be next week. He was required to wear the mask because he had apparently spat on law enforcement officials.

The hearing was quick, maybe lasting about 15 minutes.

The FBI says Ftouhi bought a knife during his five days in the US but was unsuccessful when he tried to buy a gun. After being unable to, he settled on a large knife marked Amazon jungle survival knife.
