CBO Score of Senate Health Care Bill: What Does It Mean?

Republican senators from states that have benefited from expanded Medicaid, like Louisiana, are expected to get pressure from their governors and others back at home.

Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders has criticised the proposed bill and said that lives were at stake if it passes.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, continued to reserve judgment Sunday on whether she will support or reject the health care bill released by Senate Republicans last week.

The White House also pushed back last night on the CBO's findings, warning not to "trust blindly" in its conclusions and calling into question the non-partisan agency's track record.

Multiple Republican senators appeared reluctant to support the GOP's current Obamacare replacement bill Monday following the release of a Congressional Budget Office report assessing its effects, putting its passage this week in doubt.

Trump only can afford two Republican "no" votes if his health care plan has any chance of surviving.

She said there are seven to eight other moderate Senate Republicans who share her deep concerns about Medicaid cuts.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., who is up for re-election next year, had already expressed reservations about the number of people who could lose coverage under the GOP bill. Senate leadership attempted to write a more generous version of health care reform compared to the House-passed AHCA. What's at stake here is the health of millions of Americans.

"The protections around pre-existing conditions are still in place in the Senate bill, but the waiver authority gives states options that could include limiting coverage for people with pre-existing conditions", says Pearson.

It also warned that some insurance premiums for individuals would be 20 percent higher next year than under current law, mainly because eliminating mandated coverage would prompt comparatively fewer healthy people to sign up.

A person making $26,500 would pay more for coverage under the Senate law at ages 21, 40 and 64.

Jen McGowan, associate director of the Chicago chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said Medicaid cuts in the proposal would hurt the hundreds of thousands of people in IL who suffer from mental health or substance abuse problems, and are enrolled in coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The budget office said its estimate included the impact of that addition.

Trump insists he's engaged with health care bill
In fact, he's often seemed ready to embrace any measure that he could portray as a political win - whatever it contains. Donald Trump called the House healthcare bill that resulted in 23 million additional uninsured by 2026 "mean".

The change was aimed at helping insurance companies and the insurance market by discouraging healthy people from waiting to buy a policy until they get sick. That is due to the elimination of the penalty for not having insurance. It would reduce the federal deficit by $321 billion. That's only slightly lower than the House version, which would mean 23 million more uninsured Americans.

The Senate bill would slash taxes for the wealthy offering less help for working families to buy medical insurance.

Also, senators would eliminate the mandates that require almost all Americans to have coverage and companies with more than 50 workers to provide health benefits. "It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else".

The AMA, in a letter to Senate leaders today, said the Senate bill violated the doctors' precept of "first, do no harm".

Health care is literally a life and death issue for everyone, not to mention about one-sixth of the nation's economy.
