Special counsel is investigating Trump

Special Counsel Robert Mueller met with the two top members of the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday to discuss preventing conflicts in their separate investigations into Russian election interference and he is set to meet with House intelligence panel leaders in the coming days.

After citing Gallup polls on Trump's falling approval ratings, RIA Novosti reported on Sessions' refusal to answer questions about what he discussed with the President and his response that Comey was sacked because of poor performance rather than any role in the Russian Federation investigation. He did allow for the possibility the men could have had a brief interaction "in passing" at a well-attended reception at the Mayflower Hotel before an April 2016 foreign policy speech by then-candidate Trump.

Despite Sessions' statement about the reasons for his recusal, the attorney general did not actually step aside from the Russia probe until March 2, the day after The Washington Post reported on his two previously undisclosed meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC, 6-8-17.

Trump being probed for obstructing justice, USA media report says.

On Tuesday, Sessions said Comey never told him the specifics of that February meeting.

The President has stressed he was not under investigation, and has taken to Twitter to dismiss the entire investigation as a hoax. Ruddy was at the White House on Monday but did not meet with the president , White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

Sessions did not ask the White House about whether Trump was invoking executive privilege over his testimony and Trump did not opt to assert the privilege, a senior administration official said Tuesday.

Later, Senator Ron Wyden of OR described Session's refusal to answer key questions as "stonewalling".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday responded to fired FBI Director James Comey's testimony that he had "implored" him "to prevent any future direct communication between the President and me".

"You and I agree that the American people deserve a full accounting of attempts to meddle in both our democratic processes and the impartial administration of justice".

"I was confident that he understood", said Sessions in his opening remarks.

In his riveting appearance Thursday, Comey said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was aware of information that would have made it "problematic" for Sessions to be involved in investigations into alleged Russian meddling in last year's election.

Sessions' clash with the Democratic senators was the latest chapter in a saga that has dogged Trump in his first five months as president and distracted from his domestic policy agenda including major healthcare and tax cut initiatives.

The Attorney-General also refused to discuss reports that Mr. Trump was angry at him for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation, as this led to the probe ultimately getting taken over by an independent prosecutor. At a Senate hearing last week, Coats refused to confirm or deny such reports. The Justice Department has denied such a meeting occurred. Investigators are also considering the conversations Comey and the president had leading up to that point. The problem for the president and attorney general is that even if there is no collusion with the Russians, investigations take on a life of their own and this investigation is now about perjury and obstruction of justice.

By the end of the hearing, it looked as if Sessions had gotten himself to a safe exit - at least in terms of legislative oversight.

The other issues - what Russia might do in the future and how we can frustrate Russian interference - are not, I assume, part of the fact investigation conducted by the FBI (and now the special counsel).

"I received only the limited information that the department's career officials determined was necessary to inform my recusal decision", Sessions said.
