Iran vows measures against new US sanctions

The Senate voted almost unanimously on Thursday for legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program and other activities not related to the worldwide nuclear agreement reached with the United States and other world powers.

Iran today slammed new sanctions adopted by the US Senate.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., introduced the bill, which now must pass in the House of Representatives and be signed by President Donald Trump before being enacted.

"Iran's ballistic missile program, the regime's support for global terrorism, and its blatant and egregious human rights violations should not be ignored".

Fire engulfed the social housing block in the early hours of Wednesday, turning it into a flaming torch in minutes. Mr Cundy said the victims included one person who had died in hospital.

The Iranian spokesperson rejected as "completely unjustified and illegal" allegations leveled in the bill about the country's missile capabilities.

"Iran's armed forces will continue to defend the country's security and interests", the foreign ministry spokesman said.

He noted that the US Senate's new move was not "unpredictable" due to the history of Washington's enmity toward the noble Iranian nation, adding it is in line with the US acts of hostility toward the Islamic Republic.

Tehran "will take reciprocal and adequate measures to guarantee its national interests", foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghassemi said, quoted by ISNA news agency.

'At least 30' people now confirmed dead in Grenfell fire
Authorities said Friday that least 30 people were killed in the fire and have warned that the death toll was likely to rise . Asked if the death toll could exceed 100, Cundy said: "I'd like to hope that it isn't going to be triple figures".

Resolution 2231, passed by the 15-memebr United Nations Security Council in July 2015, has endorsed the 159-page JCPOA.

In a series of Twitter messages in late May, former Secretary of State John Kerry, who was heavily involved in drafting the nuclear agreement with Iran, urged the senators not to move ahead with legislation saying "this is not the moment for a new Iran bill".

Under the resolution, Iran is "called upon" not to undertake any activity related to missiles "designed to be capable of" delivering nuclear weapons. The bill seeks to target businesses and financial institutions that have commercial dealings with any entity designated by the USA for playing a role in Iran's ballistic missile program.
