On Wednesday evening, the president and first lady Melania Trump visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise remains in critical condition.

Colleagues said Scalise, who had been fielding balls at second base, dragged himself away from the infield, leaving a trail of blood before they rushed to his assistance. Congressman Fortenberry says due to their actions more people weren't hurt. By 7.14am, the gunman, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, was down.

The president praised the "heroic actions" of the Capitol Police at the scene.

The Trumps talked to doctors and sat at Scalise's bedside to visit with his family, including his wife Jennifer, the White House said.

And, he called on his collegues to set aside partisan differences.

President Donald Trump says that wounded Congressman Steve Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized. Hodgkinson was shot dead by the police.

Congressman faces third surgery today after ballpark shooting
But in another show of bipartisanship, Thursday night's congressional baseball game will go ahead as scheduled, in Nationals Park. It has emerged that Hodgkinson had been staying in the Alexandria area since March, where he had been living out of a white van.

In this image from House Television video, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis., pauses as he speaks Wednesday, June 14, 2017, on the House floor at the Capitol in Washington, about the shooting at the congressional baseball pract. "We are all praying for those who were attacked, and their families", Ryan said.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said he condemned the shooting "in the strongest possible terms" after he learned the shooter had volunteered on his Democratic presidential campaign.

Mr Scalise voted along with other House Republicans in January to reverse a federal rule aimed at preventing people with serious mental-health problems from buying guns. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

Zack Barth appeared on the "Today" show with his boss, Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, Thursday morning after being discharged from the hospital.

Capitol Policeman David Bailey was also wounded. The Congressional Baseball Game was created in 1909 by Pennsylvania Congressman John Tener, a former pitcher for the Chicago White Stockings.

The congressional baseball match pits Republicans against Democrats.

Scalise was shot as GOP congressmen practiced early Wednesday for their annual charity baseball game, which pits Republicans against Democrats to raise money for three local charities.

Attack on lawmakers stirs memories of Giffords shooting
No one was killed in this morning's baseball field shooting except for the assailant, though Steve Scalise was shot in the hip. Dorushka said he hopes survivors will not be defined by the shooting but rather by people coming together.

On his Facebook page, Hodgkinson's support for liberal politics is evident.

Sununu said he played on the Republican team seven or eight times while representing New Hampshire in the House from 1997-2003 and the Senate from 2003-2009.

The GOP lawmakers' team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted. "And thank God he wasn't a very good shot", said Representative Joe Barton, the Republican team's manager.

Two lawmakers who were at the scene of the shooting, Representatives Ron DeSantis and Jeff Duncan, indicated there might have been a political motive in the attack.

The Capitol Hill Police, who attended the practice as part of Scalise's security detail, are being credited with preventing a potential massacre.

The gunman "was going after elected officials", Brooks said on CNN shortly after the shooting.

Staff members, and even the young son of one of the members, ran for cover, jumping into dugouts and over fences.

With police officers by his side for protection, he later told reporters as he made to leave: "People are justifiably angry. They are justifiably angry and I share their anger". "Many are grieving and are heartbroken".

Addressing Scalise, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., said, "You are not alone".
