Michigan's congressional representatives reflect on Virginia shooting

Scalise's office said the 51-year-old was "in good spirits" before entering surgery, although the hospital later updated his status to critical.

"We are grateful and humbled by the incredible law enforcement who put their lives in harm's way to protect our citizens", he said.

ABC News' "World News Tonight" will also originate from D.C. tonight with David Muir anchoring.

After news broke, Metairie Indivisible - an Indivisible Project chapter that covers Scalise's district - quickly realigned its priorities for the day.

The gunman who opened fire Wednesday morning at a USA congressional baseball practice field has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a white male in his 60s. They were practicing for an annual, bipartisan charity baseball game set to take place on Thursday at Nationals Park.

IL and Iowa lawmakers react to the Virginia shooting
The assailant, prepared with "a lot of ammo", fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died. Being concerned about safety is part of the job, Stefanik said, but she and her colleagues can't be deterred.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for unity in the wake of the shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice that injured five people, including a top House Republican. Early reports indicated that the shooter had published angry anti-Trump rhetoric on his Facebook page.

Most members of Congress are not given a security detail but Bailey and Griner had been assigned to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise because he in a leadership position.

South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan said he was leaving practice early when the man he believes was the gunman asked him if the players were Democrats or Republicans.

Some of the anger, the lawmakers said, was being fed by social media and attacks against members.

Scalise spoke to his wife on the phone before he underwent surgery.

IL lawmakers safe: Rodney Davis at practice during shooting
Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting. Two Capitol Hill police officers were hospitalised after the incident but it was not clear if both were wounded by gunfire.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams says a member of his staff was among those shot and is receiving medical attention.

"I was one of the closest to the shooter", said Brooks.

"We started giving him the liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip", Brooks said. U.S. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said some of his officers were wounded but were in good condition. Flake, of Arizona, said he ran onto the field and also tried to come to Scalise's aide.

"He was just very calm".

Four other people were taken to hospital following the shooting, which was described in a dramatic blow-by-blow account on CNN by Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center.

Special counsel Mueller also investigating possible 'money laundering by Trump associates'
In one memo, Comey said Trump tried to direct him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. A spokesman for Mr Mueller declined to comment.

But despite being shook up and deeply anxious about his colleagues who were hurt, Fleischmann said that he was not going to "let the bad guys win".
