Trump Reportedly Told Close Associates U.S. Will Leave Paris Climate Agreement

President Donald Trump says he'll make a final decision on whether the USA will stay in the Paris climate agreement next week. The president said in a tweet that he will make a decision this week. French President Emmanuel Macron, who met with Trump in Brussels, also said he had pressed the issue with the USA president, though the White House did not mention that appeal in a summary of their meeting.

Trump has previously expressed skepticism about climate change.

Trump, who for months has delayed a decision on the climate agreement, made his announcement at the conclusion of the G-7 summit in Taormina, Italy.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticised what she called "a very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory" discussion with Trump on the issue.

Graham: Withdrawing from Paris deal would be bad for GOP
He has tweeted that he will make his "final decision" on the accord after his return to Washington. Other G7 leaders are concerned the United States president might promote a protectionist agenda.

Whether because he was exhausted or trying to underscore the distance between himself and other world leaders, President Donald Trump chose to use a golf cart rather than walk with the rest of the G7 leaders in Taormina, Sicily, on the final day of his worldwide tour. A top White House adviser said the president's views were evolving on the issue.

The internal G7 divisions and a suicide bombing in Britain on Monday, that killed 22, overshadowed the Italian agenda, but on Saturday five African leaders joined the world power leaders to discuss their continent's potential. The president was warmly received on his opening stops in Saudi Arabia and Israel, though he has come under more pressure in Europe, particularly over the Paris accord.

The White House did not immediately respond, but Director of Strategic Communications Hope Hicks said, "I think his tweet was clear".

Diplomats said that on other key global issues, such as Syria and North Korea, there was broad G7 agreement.

Trump will not announce Israel embassy move on trip
Stops on the upcoming trip include Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican; places sacred to three of the worlds major religions. Those who deemed the administration to be neutral doubled to 21 percent, compared to 10 percent in January.

"If Donald Trump decides to pull his country out of the Paris climate agreement, it would provoke a strong reaction from many American states, cities and economic players who are committed to developing renewable energy", Hulot said.

And Merkel lost badly, unlike other G7 meetings America had a real representative at this one, no longer is America bending to the will of other nations.

The U.S. president is due to return to Washington later on Saturday at the end of a nine-day tour of the Middle East and Europe - his first foreign trip since taking office.

The Paris climate agreement within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, championed by former US President Barack Obama, was ratified by 143 countries. Cohn later confirmed the statement, saying it referred only to Germany's trade practices, not to its people or the country.
